Brief Description

The Children’s Hope Scale (CHS) is a measure of youth hopefulness and can be helpful in tracking hope throughout treatment. The CHS asks youth to report on their ability to generate paths toward goals and persevere toward those goals. The CHS measures pathways (i.e., children who can identify a means to carry out goals) and agency (i.e., the ability to initiate and sustain action towards goals). Respondents rate “how they are” in the situations listed (e.g., “I am doing just as well as other kids my age”) on a scale from “None of the time” to “All of the time”.

Assessment Administration Type

Self-report

Number of questions

6

Age Range for Administration

While originally designed for children 8-16, the assessment has been validated for those up to age 19.

Recommended Frequency of Administration

No standardized frequency; recommend administering every other week or as clinically indicated.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The CHS contains 6 questions scored on a 6-point Likert scale with values from 1 (“None of the time”) to 6 (“All of the time”). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses and ranges from 6 to 36; higher scores are associated with higher levels of hope. See the table below for score interpretations. The CHS also has two subscales: pathways and agency. Subscale scores are calculated by summing the corresponding item response scores. See table below:

Pathway

1, 3, 5

Agency

2, 4, 6

Clinical Considerations

  • Estimated completion time: 1-2 minutes

  • Youth hopefulness is conceptually an important factor in the successful treatment of emotional or behavioral disorders, constituting an outcome that may be affected by the treatment process. Research has linked hope with overall physical, psychological, and social wellbeing.
