Brief Description
The Severity Measure for Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Child (DSM-5 GAD-C) assesses the severity of generalized anxiety disorder in children and adolescents. The measure was designed to be completed by the child upon receiving a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (or clinically significant generalized anxiety disorder symptoms) and thereafter to monitor symptoms and progress. Respondents rate how often they experience the anxiety symptoms listed over the past 7 days (e.g., “felt anxious, worried, or nervous”) on a scale from “Never” to “All of the time.”

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations
The DSM-5 GAD-C contains items rated on a 5-point scale from 0 (“Never”) to 4 (“All of the time”). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses and ranges from 0 to 40; higher scores indicate greater severity of generalized anxiety disorder.
Additionally, an average total score can be calculated by summing all item responses and dividing by 10, and ranges from 0-4. See the table below for interpretation.
