Focus Area: Therapeutic alliance

Overview: The Agnew Relationship Measure 5 (ARM-5) is a shorter, 5-question version of the 28-question Agnew Relationship Measure. There is also a 12-question version available. It was created to look at the relationship between the client and therapist. It should be completed at the end of each therapy session at regular intervals such as every session, every other session, etc. It looks at three aspects of the therapeutic alliance: 1. Bond, 2. Partnership, and 3. Confidence in therapy.

Supported subscales: 1. Bond, 2. Partnership, and 3. Confidence in therapy

Age range: Adult

Scoring and interpretation: Answers are scored on a 7-point Likert scale from 1 to 7 with 1 for "Strongly disagree" to 7 for "Strongly agree." Question #3 is reverse scored. Scores are summed and total scores range from 5 to 35 and higher scores are associated with stronger therapeutic alliances.

In addition, there are three subscales. The Bond subscale is made up of question #1. Partnership subscale is made up of questions #2 and 3. Confidence subscale is made up of questions #4 and 5. It is important to note that the Confidence subscale has been specifically identified as the strongest predictor of positive client outcomes.
