Overview: The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to identify people who are have or are at risk of developing problematic behaviors with alcohol. It is a widely-used and accurate test.

Scoring and interpretation: The first eight questions have five answer options which are scored from 0 to 4 with the first answer option scored as 0 (i.e. "never"), the second as 1, the third as 2, the fourth as 3, and the fifth as 4 (i.e. "daily or almost daily").The answer associated with 0 is related to less frequent/less severe symptoms and the answer associated with 4 is related to more frequent/more severe symptoms. The last two questions (9 & 10) have three answer options instead of five. The first answer option is scored as 0, the second is scored as 2, and the third is scored as 4. 0 is still less frequent/severe and 4 is more frequent/severe. Scores are summed and total scores range from 0 to 40. Scores of 8 or greater are associated with harmful or hazardous drinking and a score of 13 or greater for women and 15 or greater for men is associated with alcohol dependence.
