Brief Description

The Clinical Impairment Assessment Questionnaire (CIA 3.0) measures the severity of functional impairment associated with eating disorders. The 16 items cover impairment in domains of life that are typically affected by eating disorder psychopathology: mood and self-perception, cognitive functioning, interpersonal functioning, and work performance. The purpose of the CIA 3.0 is to provide a simple single index of the severity of psychosocial impairment secondary to eating disorder features. Respondents rate how often their eating habits, exercising, or feeling about their eating, shape, or weight have affected their life over the past 4 weeks/28 days (e.g., “Made it difficult to concentrate?”) on a scale from “Not at all” to “A lot”.

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The CIA 3.0 contains 16 questions scored on a 4-point Likert scale with values from 0 (“Not at all”) to 3 (“A lot”). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses and ranges from 0 to 48; higher scores are associated with higher levels of psychosocial impairment associated with an eating disorder and scores of 16 or greater represent clinically significant impairment.
