Brief Description

The Social Phobia Scale (SPS) measures social phobia in the form of being observed or judged during everyday activities such as eating, drinking, or walking around. This measure is useful in tracking symptoms of social phobia and self-consciousness over time. Respondents rate the degree to which they feel each statement (e.g., “I become anxious if I have to write in front of other people”) on a scale from “Not at all” to “Extremely.”

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The SPS contains 20 questions scored on a 5-point Likert scale with values from 0 (Not at all) to 4 (Extremely). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses and ranges from 0 to 80; higher scores are associated with more social phobia/anxiety.
