Brief Description

The Mood and Feelings Questionnaire - Parent Short (MFQ-P-S) is a tool for assessing depressive symptoms in youth ages 6-17 via parent-report. It has been adapted from the MFQ-Parent Long version and consists of 13 descriptive phrases regarding how the child has been feeling or acting recently. Respondents (i.e. parent/caregiver of the child) rate how often their child may have been feeling or acting over the last two weeks according to the depressive symptoms listed (e.g., “s/he felt miserable or unhappy”) on a scale from “Not true” to “True.”

Summary of Scoring and Interpretations

The MFQ-P-S contains 13 questions scored on a 3-point Likert scale with values from 0 (“Not true”) to 2 (“True”). A total score is calculated by summing the item responses and ranges from 0 to 26; higher scores are associated with higher levels of, or more severe, depressive symptoms. Research has demonstrated that a score of 11 or higher may indicate the presence of clinically significant depression in the child.

Clinical Considerations

  • Estimated completion time: 2-4 minutes

  • In addition to the MFQ-Parent Long version, there are also child and adult self-report versions of the MFQ on Blueprint. The MFQ has also been translated to other languages for use, including Spanish, which can be found in Blueprint's Assessment library. This all can be found on Duke University’s website linked below.
